History
The History of Alwar dates back to some 3500 years back when the great
heroes of epic Mahabharata lived. At that time it wasn't a desert region but
a 'Matsya Desh' or a fish land. It is said that the local residents of the
place helped Pandavas to fight a battle against Kaurvas.
Much later,the city had gained prominence in the 18th century under the
reign of Thakur Pratap Singh. It was he pushed back the monarchs of Jaipur
to the Southern part and the Jats of Bharatpur to the East. He successfully
restricted Maratha invasion. The city is one of the first Rajput States to
assort itself with the fledging British empire. During this time the city
was bestowed with splendid palaces and life was led in utter luxury. Raja
Banai Singh, a lover of art and architecture, who ruled Alwar from 1815 to
1857 A.D. is also another person who contributed in beautification of this
city. But no one can be at par with Raja Jai Sing who succeeded to the
throne in the year 1902 AD. and ruled for 30 years He was popular for his
sophisticated lifestyle.
