Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Bharatpur, RajasthanAs soon as we name Bharatpur, a picture of Wildlife in Rajasthan comes into our mind. It would not be wrong to say that Bharatpur is identified with and synonymous to the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. The city is popular because of the World Heritage Site , the Keoladeo Ghana National Park. The city of Bharatpur represents yet one more facet of Rajasthan and thereby adds up to the spice of variety. Seeing migratory and non migratory birds at the park is one of the favorite Things to do in Bharatpur. It was once a hunting ground of the Maharaja of Bharatpur but later transformed into Ghana National Park. Besides, the city also has some traces of its rich historical heritage. These forts and palace bespeak for the History of Bhartapur. History of Bharatpur Rajasthan :
Bhartapur was also a Matsya Desh – Land of Fish like Alwar. Bharatpur History is a blend of mythology and ancient civilization. The place is said to shelter the Pandavas during their 13 years of exile some 3500 years back. Bharatpur Archaeological Museum preserves the remains of the ancient civilization. Another evidence for the connection of city with mythology is the belief in a legend that the city has been named after Bharat, the brother of Lord Ram. Another brother of Ram, Laxman was the family deity of the rulers of Bharatpur and so his name is engraved on the state arms and the seals.

The city was founded by by Rustam, a Jat of Sogariya clan. The region has seen the domination of Jats till 17th century where it had seen leaders like Churaman and Badan Singh. However, Suraj Mal was the greatest ruler of them all who played a vital role in history of Bharatpur.

Attractions of Bharatpur :
Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary : This is the greatest attraction of all. Tourists to Bharatpur love to be welcomed by the melodious numbers hummed in their ears by as many as 354 species of birds of the sanctuary. Indeed, it is the best place for bird watchers where you see birds flying, perched in their nests, feeding their chicks, playing in water. Visit the park during winters to meet our foreign guests...our very own non migratory who pay visit to the park in winters.

Lohagarh : After experiencing the essence of park, your next stop can be at Lohararh which literally means Iron Fort. The fort was built in 18th century by a Jat ruler, Suraj Mal. Even the delapidated fort has many charms to see. It stands firm even after several attempts of invasion and attack in history. See the Jawahar Burj, the Fateh Burj, Government Museum where you have the 7th century carving of Shiva and Parvati and a carving of Shiva as Natraj, old photographs of Maharaja and his family on display. Jawahbij will give a magnificent view of the surroundings. See the Nehru Park where lush gardens and flower beds are beautiful to see.

Ganga Temple : Come out to the Lohiya Gate and you see the Ganga Temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The temple construction was started by Maharaja Balwant Singh in 1845, but was completed by by Maharaja Brijendra Sawai in 1937. The two storied structure built of sandstone and chequered floors painted in black and white are unique.

Highlights of Bharatpur
Just imagine that a soon as you enter the park you hear chirping of birds, you see birds that are native and non native. The very site may just take you over. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park or Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, spread in a area of about 29 sq. meters, is a plethora of highly endangered and rare birds like the Siberian Crane. During hibernation numerous ornithologists horde the place. In 1971, the site was declared a World Heritage Site. Besides bird watching, you can enjoy Cycling around the park, Boating in the Bharatpur Lake, walking trips in the Bharatpur National Park and exploring the park on a rickshaw ride.
