History of
Bikaner Rajasthan
Here some traces of History of Bikaner will help us see the city in
historical perspective. The desert bastion, Bikaner, was founded by Rao Bika
in 1488, one of the sons of Rao Jodha of Jaipur, after leaving his house and
pledging to establish his own kingdom. With the blessings of Karni Mata, he
set up his kingdom big in size as England. The city was a major trade center
on the old caravan route which linked central Asia and North India with the
sea ports of Gujarat until a Rathor Prince, Bika, conquered it in 1486 A.D.
and named it Bikaner.
The 16th century saw the conflict with Mughals and much time had gone
fighting with them. But by the late 16th century Bikaner won and Raja
Prithviraj Singh, a poet and a warrior, in fact became one of the "Nine
Gems " of Akbar's court. By that time the city had gained much
importance for its trade affairs. But the real Bikaner emerged out in reign
of Maharaja Ganga Singh who is regarded as the most advanced and powerful
ruler of state.
A Tourist's Delight (Sightseeing in Bikaner):
Junagarh Fort : The city of Bikaner has many lures to
command your attention. The fortified city has forts dating back to 15th
century. Among them the Junagrah Fort, built by Raja Rai Singh an
important person in the court of Akbar- holds a special place. The splendid
fort has two gateways The Suraj Pol and Daulat Pol. You will be awestruck to
see 37 majestic mahals in the fort. Some of the mahals are Anup Mahal, Ganga
Niwas and Rang Mahal. You can find a beautiful temple Hari temple in the
same premises.
Ganga Government Museum : Built in red sandstone, close
to the Lalgarh Palace by Maharaja Ganga Singh, the museum is also known as
the Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum. You will find hunting trophies that
provides evidence of the existence of life around 320 AD. Other objects that
are on display are crafts made by Usta craftsmen and gold leaf paintings on
camel hide, objects of the royal family like utensils, clothes and carpets.
Prachina Museum : The museum is a storehouse of Bikaner's
art and crafts exhibiting the rituals, beliefs custom and manners of the
people of Bikaner. Some of the things you get to see here are stone studded
mirror frames, lacquer lamps, embroidered camel hide crafts, silver and
metal artifacts and gold leaf craft and other artifacts.
Temples : Besides, forts and museums, there are temples
which are worth visiting. Two important temples to visit are Bhandasar Jain
Temple and Shiv Bari Temple.
