The
historical city of Chittaurgarh is one of the most prominent
Cities
of Rajasthan. The city is an embodiment of love, romance and valor. Formerly
known as Chitrakoot, the city has produced many chivalrous men and women who
have defended the city thrice from invasions and attacks. Even the Rajput
women are not cowards. They used to perform Jauhar, a ceremony of self
immolation, to save their respect when Ala-ud-din Khilji tried to nobble
them. The city reflects the quintessence of sacrifice and honor. The

History of
Chittaurgarh
The History of Chittaurgarh is very glorious. On each attack and invasion
Jauhar was performed by the females to save the honor of Rajput community.
The city saw its first defeat in 1303 when Ala-ud-din Khilji, the Pashtun
King of Delhi, was smitten by beauty of Padmini and besieged the fort.
Padmini and other women performed jauhar when the victory could not be
procrastinated.
In 1535 Bahadur Shah, ruler of Gujarat besieged the fort and this time the
shamble was massive where 13,000 Rajput women and 32,000 Rajoput warriors
sacrificed their their lives in the name of honor. Later after almost 33
years, Chittaurgarh was again attacked and this time Akbar was the one who
invaded the fort. Even this time 8000 orange robed warriors rode out to
their deaths. In 1616 Jehangir returned the city to the Rajputs but without
any resettlements.
Tourists Attractions of Chittaurgarh
Chittorgarh Fort : The massive Fort is spread over an
area of 280 hectares. The splendid fort is perched on a hilltop. Tourists
love to see the cenotaphs, constructed to honor Jaimal and Kula, Tower of
Victory, Rana Kumbha's Palace, Fateh Prakash
Palace
and Rani Padmini's Palace in the fort.
Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) : The tower is built to
commemorate the victory of Maharana Kumbha over Mahumud Khilji. You will
find the sculptures of Hindu deities on the 9 storied tower. Climbing the
157 narrow steps, you will reach the terrace where you to get a see the
beautiful view of the city.
Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) : This 22 meters high 7-
storied must visit tourist attraction tower, built by a wealthy Jain
merchant in the 12th century A.D., is dedicated to Dedicated to Adinath, the
1st Jain Teerthankar. Reach the top by climbing the staircases.
Rana Kumbha Palace : Located within the Chittorgarh fort,
the ruins of the 15th century contains
elephant
and horse stables and a Shiva temple. The tales of juahar are dominant here.
You will also see the Archaeological Office, museum, a treasury building
(Nau Lakha Bhandar). In the nearby vicinity is the Singa Chowri Temple.
Padmini
Palace : Come to the south of the Chittorgarh fort and you will see the
beautiful palace built across a lotus pool with a pavilion in the center.
Legends hold that Ala-ud-din-khilji was allowed to see the reflection of
Padmini in the mirror in the pavilion. This very spark instigated him to
capture the fort and have her. Close by the Padmini Palace, there is a small
prison that had captivated invaders and sultan of Malwa. Continue to the
circular road and you see the Bhimlat Temple, Adbhutnath Temple, the
Surajpol and Neelkanth Mahadeva Jain Temple before reaching the Vijay
Stambha.
Kalika Mata Temple: The temple dates back to 8th century
and it was initially dedicated to Sun God. Later it as converted to a temple
dedicated to Goddess Kali.
Lokhota Bari : From Kalika Mata Temple you head towards
north and there is another gate of the fort, Lokhota Bari. While at the
southern end, there is a small opening form which criminals and traitors
were hurled into abyss.
Ganmukh Reservoir : Walk down the Sammadhieshwar Temple
in the fort and you come to Ganmukh Reservoir. It is a deep tank at the edge
of the cliff. The name of the tank has originated form a spring which feeds
the tank from a cow's mouth carved at he cliff side. The opening here will
lead to the place where Padmini, along with many other women, performed
jauhar.
Other tourist attractions in Chittorgarh include the famous Kumbha Shyam
Temple, Meerabai Temple, Mahasati, Sammidieshwar Temple, Fateh Prakash
Palace.

The city of Chittorgarh is known for the heroism and valor of
Royal
Rajputs. Women and men both sacrificed their lives in the name of
patriotism and honor. Chittaurgarh, alone, has many legends of Jauhar where
Padmini had performed juahar in order to save the honor of Rajput clan along
with her own dignity. The city oozes with a saga of heroism and courage.
