Close to Bharatpur in Rajasthan, a jat named Chuhru founded a small town in
1620 A.D. It is our present Churu. Churu comes in discussion when we talk of

Glimpses From
History
The city of Churu was founded by a Jat chieftain Chuhru in 1620 A.D. Before
the Rathors annexed it, it was a part of Jangladesh. It was ruled by Thakur
Maldeo, the grandson of Rao Kandhal and uncle of Rao Bika. Churu fall to
Bikaner in 1871. Before independence, Churu was a part of Bikaner State. The
district came into existence in 1948 including three tehsils like Churu,
Rajgarh and Taranagar when the administration of Bikaner State was
reorganized.
A Tourist's Delight
Ratangarh : Built by Raja Ratan Singh in 1820, this fort
is a prime attraction here. Located on the Agra Bikaner highway, the
fort is exemplar of medieval planned city.
Surana Double Haveli : This is a five storied structure
with numerous windows resembling to Georgian effect. The haveli has more
than 1100 doors.
Surajmal Banthia Haveli : Built in 1920s it is famous for
infamous picture of Christ holding a cigar on the external north wall.
Temples : Salasar Balaji, located at Japur-Bikaner
highway, is famous among pilgrims devoted to Lord Hanman. The fairs held
twice every year, attract many pilgrims. Temples of Raghunathji,
Laxminarayanji and Chandgothia are well known for their wall paintings.
Domes : Churu is famous for chattris or domes. Aath Kambh
Chhatri (Eight Pillar Dome) built in 1776 and the Godia Chhatri will show
you lovely murals inside. The merchant families of Mantri, Bagla and Lohia
have eleborate domes in their honor.
Talchappar Wildlife Sanctuary : Declared a reserved area
in the year 1962, the sanctuary enjoys a typical eco-system. A home to
migratory and non migratory birds, mammals, animals and black buck, the
sanctuary attracts tourists because of its beautiful
lake
Tal Chappar within it.
