History of Jaipur Rajasthan :
The History of Jaipur is very interesting. The city has derived its name
from its founder, Maharaja Jai Singh II. Jai Singh came into the power at
very young age of 12 at the sudden demise of his father Maharaja Bishan
Singh. Maharaj Jai Singh was extremely politically, intellectually talented.
He had equal expertise in the battlefield and was known as the
warrior-astronomer. After three years of his succession to the throne, Jai
Singh was capable enough to withstand the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb.
Aurangzeb was so much impressed by the wit of Jai Sing that he conferred the
title of Sawai which means One and a Quarter. The
title was proudly borne by all the descendants of Jai Singh.
The wealth of the kingdom increased immensely and a rising need to settle
the burgeoning population led Jai Singh to establish a new city which he
named Jaipur. His vision and the intellect of Vidyadhar, the chief
architect, helped in the establishment of city. Jai Singh's keen interest in
arts, science and religion fostered their development in Jaipur. After Jai
Singh's Death in 1744, his many offspring laid the kingdom prey to be
invaded by the neighboring Rajput empires. It enjoyed cordial relations with
the British. The credit of painting the city in pink goes to Maharaja Ram
Singh who wanted the city to be a symbol of hospitality.
Following Indian independence in the later years, the royal land was
transformed and was merged with Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner thereby
becoming the greater Rajasthan union. The title was revoked and Man Singh II
was designated as an Indian Ambassador in Spain.
