Glimpses From History
The History of Jaisalmer is quite glorious. The historians maintains the
foundation of Jaisalmer in around 1156 when the Bhatti Rajput ruler Jaisala
shifted the city from the susceptible former capital of Lodhruva. History
has been subsequently derived from the tales and songs of bards (the court
singers). The dominant clan of Jaisalmer were the Bhattis whose major
opponents were the powerful Rather clans of Jodhpur and Bikaner. Many
battles were fought for one or the other reason.
With the advent of Muslims, the conflicts changed and due to its location
in deep
desert,
Jaisalmer kept itself free from much Muslim intrigue. The sieges of
Jaisalmer are the subject of traditional ballads about Bhatti heroes. Greta
wealth was brought to Jaisalmer due to the camel train routes between India
and central Asia. Jaisalmer lost its importance because of Bombay port but
in 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistan war it regained its prominence.
