History of Jodhpur
The History of Jodhpur is full mosaic of events. The city was founded by
Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rajput clan. Jodhpur was the capital of the
Rathore kingdom once known as Marwar. The Rathores were driven by Afghans
from their homelands and fled to the region around Pali. Marriage of Rathore
Siahji and the sister of a local prince enabled the Rathores to consolidate
themselves in the region.
By 1949, it was realized that a
more secured headquarters was required and Mandore became the obvious choice
for it. Eventually, a treaty was signed by the erstwhile ruler of the city
with the British to ensure safety of the city and its people.
A Tourist's Delight
Mehrangarh Fort : The fort is still run by the maharaja
of Jodhpur. Extended across 125 m high hill the
Mehrangarh
fort is apparently the most formidable for of Rajasthan. The
original fort was constructed by Rao Jodha in 1459 after whom the city has
been named. See the cenotaph Chattri of Kiratsingh Sodha, Jayapol, Fatehpol,
Lohapol, Phool mahal, Zhanki mahal, moti mahal and a museum in the fort
which has interesting artifacts.
Jaswant
Thada : It is a white marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It
is located just off the fort road and is about 400m north east of the fort.
The cenotaph built in 1899 is followed by the royal crematorium and three
cenotaphs later. There is beautiful jaali (lattice) work over the wooden
doors and windows.
Umaid Bhawan Palace : Built in marble and pink sandstone,
this massive palace is also called Chittar Palace. It was begun in 1929 and
designed by the President of British Royal Institute. You will also see a
museum at the palace that houses an assortment of beautifully crafted
weapons, stuffed leopards, clock collections and Chinese urns.
Clock Tower : It is also an important landmark in the
bustling city of Jodhpur and a wonderful place to ramble around.
The Bishnoi Villages : These
villages
are located along and off the Pali Road to the south-east of Jodhpur. The
Bishnoi community is known for their interest in environment conservation
and preservation.
Dhawa Doli Wildlife Sanctuary : The region is famous for
the wildlife as well. To the 40 km south west of Jodhpur the Dhawa Doli
Wildlife Sanctuary is located. You can spot blackbucks, partridges, desert
fox and blue bull or nilgai at this sanctuary.
