History
Some glimpses from History of Kota will help us know the city better. Bundi
was chosen the capital of after the Rajput conquest of this area in the 12th
century. It gained independence and became a separate state in 1624 until it
was merged in Rajasthan state after Indian Independence. The city was
started building in 1264 following the defeat of Kotaya who was Bhil
Chieftain. The city was not like the one present today until Rao Madho
Singh, a son of ruler of Bundi, was made the ruler of Kota by Jehangir, the
Mughal Emperor. Eventually Kota gained importance and became a flourishing
center of
art
and culture.
A Tourist's Delight
City Place : Overlooking the Chambal river and standing
beside the Kota Barrage is the City Palace. It is one of its kind. Once,
treasury, courts, arsenal, soldiers, and various state offices were located
here. You can enter the fort through a very beautiful gate Hathi Pol
(Elephant Gate) built in the 17th century A.D.
Rao Madho Singh Museum : This impressive museum is in the
complex of the city Palace fort. You will find a collection of weapons, old
costumes and some some of the finest murals in Rajasthan. Also a collection
of animal and trophies and portraits of the rulers of the yesteryears.
Jagmandir
: Built by one of the maharanis of Kota in 1740, the exquisite little
palace is of Jagmandir is is in the middle of the Kishore Sagar Tank.
Brij Vilas Palace Museum (Government Museum) : Located in
a small simple palace near Kishore Sagar, the museum has a collection of
Stone idols and other such preserved things as paintings, weapons, and old
manuscripts.
Gardens : You will find many well maintained gardens in
the city that are really charming to see. On the banks of Chambal river, you
will see Chambal
Gardens popular for
picnics. The feature of these gardens that makes them remarkable is that you
can spot some rare ghariyals (Crocodiles) here. Another important garden of
the city is Chattar Vilas Garden.

The city is like an oasis in the deserts of Rajasthan. The lake and gardens
