Glimpses From History
Pushkar is one of the oldest towns of India. An exact date may not not be
known but the legends associate it with Brahma. It is said that the sacred
lake of Pushkar sprang up on the spot where Lord Brahma dropped a lotus from
his hand. The creator of the universe wanted to perform a yagna or a holy
sacrifice at the lake on Poornima or full moon night. And as his wife
Savitri did not take part in the yagna, he married another woman named
Gayatri. When Savitri came to know about it, she spelled a curse that Brahma
will not be worshiped anywhere else but only Pushkar. And since then, the
temple has remained here.
