Glimpses From History
The History of Ramgarh starts with Poddars, the flourishing wool merchants
of Churu, who established the breathtaking city. When the chieftain of Churu
imposed a tax on the wool trade, the state funds started depleting. The
Poddars did not accept and being immensely annoyed, they moved out and of
the place and founded the city of Ramgarh with the aid of king of Sikar in
1791. They proclaimed to make the city more elegant than Churu. Your tour to

Delight
Temples: The city houses some of the most important and beautiful temples.
One of them, is the Ganga Temple built by a Poddar in 1845. As the Poddars
determined to outdo Churu, they had spent 32, 000 INR to make this massive
temple. The adjoining Dharamshala had graceful woodwork. The temple walls
have fine murals. Passing through lots of arches is quite amusing.
Another temple is the Shani Temple built by a Khemka family in 1840,
devoted to Saturn. A contrast of rugged and dilapidated exteriors and
elegant adoration of murals and mirror work in the interiors. The murals are
of varied subjects and colors. Next is the Hanuman Temple built by the Ruias
in about 1885. Locals address it by a different name Lal Kuan Mandir (the
Red Well Temple), perhaps owing to the fact that a well somewhere in the
complex which was painted red. Other edifices to see in Ramgarh are the
Natwar Niketan, Ram-Lakshman Temple and the Surekha Dharamshala.
Havelis: The city houses some of the most beautiful
mansions of Rajasthan. As Poddars hailed to Ramgarh, they bestowed the town
with exquisite havelis to show the prowess of royalty. Some of the mansions
worth seeing are Bashashwarlal Poddar Haveli, built in 1830 with ochre
paintings of floral designs, Tarachand Ghanshyamdas Poddar Haveli, the Anant
Ram Poddar Double
Haveli,
the Jagannath Poddar Double Haveli and the two Ruia Havelis, another
dominant family after Poddars. The edifices are painted in red and blue
murals.
Chattris: The another most important structures of
Ramgarh are Chattris. These cenotaphs commemorate the heroism of Rajasthan
rulers. Among many the Ram Gopal Poddar Chhatri will catch your attention.
This cenotaph was built by the Poddars in 1872 with some great murals in the
dome. The three categories of the scenes depicted here are the the Ramayana,
the life of Krishna and ragamala paintings illustrating the musical notes.
The Poddar Chattri is very massive and can surpass a palace with 500 murals
all over it. The Ramayana Chattri is elegant of them all with beautiful
collections of maroon and blue murals displaying scenes from the epic
Ramayana.
Highlights of Ramgarh
The city is dotted with exquisite specimens of fine structures. The
temples, the mansions and the cenotaphs all reflect the beauty of these
edifices. The paintings and murals in the edifices are worth seeing. Thy
