Glimpses From History
Located near the town of Sawai Madhopur on the way of Bharatpur and Kota is a lovely city Ranthambore. In the 13th century A.D., Govinda, the grandson of Prithviraj Chauhan ruled the land and later Vagbhatta succeeded the reign and adorned the city. The park was visited by the princes and rajas of Rajasthan for extensive game shoots. In the 19th century the park was exclusive hunting reserve of the Jaipur and Karauli royal family managed by the Shikar Khana Department (Hunting Department) of the state. As the park headed towards the first quarter of 20th century, the need for preservation and restoration of wildlife and it lead up to establish the Ranthambore National Park. The park is washed by Chambal River in the south and Banas River in the north. The park is adorned by the dry decideous forests, open grassy meadows, various lakes, and rivers. A Tourist's Delight
Ranthambore Wildlife Sanctuary : Cradled by the Aravali and Vindhya Ranges, the park sprawls over an area of 400 sq km. established as a Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1955, it was declared a National Park in the year of 1981. The park has taken great measures to ensure the preservation of tigers. Many tourists to the park are attracted by the tigers.

Ranthambore Fort: The massive fort of Ranthambore is a dominating edifice after which the park was named. It is located within the park atop a steep hill. The fort is a must visit for having a splendid view of the adjoining areas. It is also remarkable for the three temples of Hindus devoted to Ganesh, Shiva and Ramlalji.

Jogi Mahal: The beautiful palace houses the second largest Banyan tree of country. The palace is located on the banks of Padam Talao which is the largest lake of Ranthambore National Park.

Lakes: The Wildlife of the Park is accentuated by the picture perfect lakes. The most picturesque lake among the lakes of Ranthambore is the Rajabagh Talao. Here you can even spot a tiger drinking water or keeping a vigil on its prey. Intensifying the charm are the Ruins of Raj Bagh with ancient pavilions, domes, arches, steps and other stone structures. If you are looking forward to birds watching and spotting crocodiles, then see the smallest lake of the park - Malik Talao. Go to the terrains like Lakarda and Anantpura are good for seeing sloth bears.

Ranthambore School of Arts: The city has more to it other than wildlife. The school has villagers as its students. The theme is quite obviously tiger in all its grace and majesty. The paintings make the villagers aware of preservation of wildlife.
