Languages
Language is the main source of communication and Rajasthanis are great
communicators. Located in the North Western province of India, this state
abound in heritage and royalty. Basically a Hindi-speaking belt, various
dialects of Hindi are also prevalent among the locales. The glorious
history
of Rajasthan has seen many ups and downs. Various dynasties have ruled over
the state which has enriched the lingua franca of the state. Hindi and its
dialects are very popular and used for communication in Rajasthan. English,
being the Second Language is spoken here in Rajasthan also.
Languages and Dialects of Rajasthan
The linguistic diversity of state is amazing. The popular language and
dialects of Rajasthan are:
Marwari: It
is the most common dialect of Rajasthan spoken in and around Jodhpur
district. Barmer, Jalore, Pali, part of Nagaur district preserve the mixed
dialects of Marwari. Travelers to Ajmer,
UdaipurUdaipur, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, to
the south in Sirohi district will come across the dialects influenced by
Marwari. The northwest districts of Rajasthan, like Ganganagar, boast of
Marwari dialect influenced by Punjabi.
Mewari: Mewari is one of the major dialects of Rajasthan
originating from Indo Aryan language family. Speakers of Rajsamand,
Bhilwara, Udaipur and Chittorgarh districts use this dialect for
communication. The same dialect takes different names in different regions
of Rajasthan. It is reffered to as Thali in North and Dhatak in West in the
western parts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Thar and Parkar areas of the former
Sindh. It is even called Bagri in Churu and Bikaneri in Bikaner.
Jaipuri / Dhundhari: With regards to its speakers and
usage Jaipuri holds second position. The districts of Jaipur, Tonk, Kota,
Bundi, parts of Kishangarh,
Ajmer and Jhalawar use this dialect. The Jaipuri
Dialect, Mewati spoken in the northeast, is the same Braj Bhasha
which is spoken in Bharatpur.
Mewati: Mewati is nothing but actually a language of
former Mewat, the abode of the Meos. The further sub division of Braj Bhasha
in Sawai Madhopur and Karauli gives us Dang. You will come close to Ajmeri
in Ajmer and Kishangarhi in Kishangarh. The districts of Bundi, Kota,
Jhalawar and Tonk speak in Harauti dialect.
Malvi: The Malwa region of Rajasthan speaks the Malvi
language. Sometimes known as Malavi or Ujjaini, is classified with the
Rajasthani languages, with Nimadi, spoken in the Nimar region of Madhya
Pradesh. People of Rajasthan speak various dialect of Malvi language like
Bachadi, Bhoyari, Dholewari, Hoshangabadi, Jamral, Katiyai, Malvi Proper,
Patvi, Rangari, Rangri and Sondwari.
Bhill Languages: A group of Western Indo-Aryan languages
spoken by many Bhill tribes is known as Bhill language. The Bhill languages
constitute the primary languages of the southern Aravalli Range in Rajasthan
and the western Satpura Range in Madhya Pradesh.
Shekhawati Language: Originating from Indo-Aryan
languages family, Shekhawati, is spoken by about three million speakers in
Churu, Jhunjhunu and Sikar districts of Rajasthan. The language is rich in
terms of Lexicography.
