About the Temple

The
town of Eklingi is located very close to
UdaipurUdaipur
in Rajasthan. The town is pregnant with many shrines and temples among which
the most famous is Eklingi temple devoted to Lord Shiva, as the name
suggests. Its inception dates back to 734 A.D. but the contemporary complex
was built during the reign of Maharaja Railmal (1473 1509). The
household of Mewar deemed Lord Shiva the ultimate superpower and so he is
the paramprabhu.
The deity was said to be the
virtual ruler by the kings of
Mewar
who regraded themselves as the regents of Eklingi. The beautiful valley
attracts many visitors and pilgrims round the year with 108 Shiva temples in
a temple complex surrounded by a wall. Audio guides are available for the
convenience of the pilgrims and visitors. Explore the temple with them and
you get to know the popular folk legends associated with the temple.
Beautiful Architecture
The beauty of temple is enhanced with the sandstone and marble. The complex
of the temple has an extensively ornate pillared hall mandapam
under a huge pyramidal roof. The hall enshrines the a black marbled four
faced Shiva idol which symbolizes
Brahma
facing west, Vishnu facing north, Maheshwar facing south and Surya (Sun)
facing the east.. Extended to an area of 2500 sq. feet, the temple is 65
feet in height. The silver doors of the temple with images of Ganesha and
Kartikeya are very lovely to see. The brackets in the temple show nymphs in
erotic dance postures.
Must See - Must Do
Other Temples: Besides the image of Lord Shiva, the
temple complex include idols of Parvati, Ganesha, Ganga, Kartikeya, Yamuna
and Saraswati. Even there are some small temples which are dedicated to Amba

called Nathon Ka Mandir in the temple complex which has inscriptions dating
back to the 10th century A.D.
Tanks: To the north of the temple there are two kunds
Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund. The water from these tanks is used to offer the
services at temple. Early in the morning the temple services are executed in
an elaborate form in Vedic and Tantric styles.
