Climate of Rajasthan
Climate of RajasthanThe north western state of India, Rajasthan, is a land of dry and hot climate. Due to its varied topography, the climate of Rajasthan greatly varies throughout the state. Where the western parts of Rajasthan are comparatively dry and infertile, the southwestern part of the state, is hilly and fertile and the southern part of the state has been blessed with River Luni and River Chambal with its tributaries. The area of the Thar Desert called the Great Indian Desert is barren and hot. The state enjoys a tropical desert climate. October to February are quite chilly with winters and summers are extremely hot with the scorching and prickling heat of sun. Scanty rainfall in the state is a major factor for dryness.

The climate of Rajasthan can be categorized into four parts:
  • Pre-Monsoon
  • Monsoon
  • Post Monsoon
  • Winter

Pre Monsoon: It extends form April to June and is the hottest season in Rajasthan. The temperature ranges from 32 d C to 45 d C. The Aravali ranges of the west sand north west give some relief. When temperature rises upto 45° C in summers, the hill station of Mount Abu gives some relief from the heat. In the desert regions temperature plummets as night approaches. The winds prevailing are from west that carry dust storms which are locally named as 'aandhi'.

Monsoon: Monsoon are a bit relief from the scorching heat of Rajasthan. It is the time when the state receives rainfall. In late June the eastern and south eastern regions of Rajasthan welcome rains. And mid July brings rains to whole state. Preceded by dust and thunderstorms, the temperature in monsoon season ranges from 35° C to 40° C. The state receives approximately 90% of its annual rainfall in this season only. It is the most humid season in Rajasthan.
Post Monsoon: The monsoon passes over the state by Mid September and it is followed by a second hot season starting October to November when the average maximum temperature ranges between 33° C to 38° C, and the minimum is between 18° C and 20° C.

Winters: For the travelers to Rajasthan, this is the most appropriate time to visit the state. Winters or cold season starts from December to March. The regional variations are marked with difference of maximum and minimum temperatures. The temperature ranges from 10° C to 27° C. January is the coldest month of the year. There is a slight precipitation in the North and North Eastern regions of the state. The humidity of the temperature varies from 50% to 60% in the morning and 25% to 35% in the afternoon.
