Information on Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary

One of its kind, the Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary is a jewel in the crown of
India wildlife reserves. Declared as a World heritage Site in 1985, the
sanctuary is home to many species of flora and fauna and specially birds
both migratory and non migratory. It was incepted as a duck shooting reserve
for Maharaja Suraj Mahl of
Bharatpur in 1850. The small park in the
sanctuary give it another name Keoladeo Ghana National Park where ghana
means dense and thick. Visit the park during monsoons and this the best to
encounter with maximum avian activities. Some most ravishing birds deck
themselves in the beautiful ambiance of the park. Today the park enjoys the
status of world's most important bird breeding and feeding grounds. The park
is a stretches of marshes, scrubland and grassland.
Flora and Fauna
of Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary
The main attraction of the sanctuary remains the birds. During monsoons
(July August) the park is a haven for for vast colonies of birds that
come to breed and feed on the wetland's rich aquatic species. Some of the
species that are found here at this time include storks, moorhens, herons,
egrets and cormorants. You will love the site of storks spreading their
wings to cover their chicks against the blazing sun. Keoladeo also breeds
three types of cormorants.
The snake birds or the Indian darter is another common specie of bird. This
lovely bird can be seen fishing in the for a lot of time. Saras cranes are
the most dominant birds in the park. The kingfishers and the birds of prey
like eagles, vultures and owls are also seen here. Besides, there are many
Migratory birds at Bharatpur bird sanctuary that include, several species of
Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails,
Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits.
Besides birds, another fauna to be spotted in the National Park are nilgai,
sambar, spotted dear, jackals, wild boars, otters, hares, civets, fishing
and jungle cats, porcupines and black bucks.
Tourist Attractions in Bharatpur Wildlife Sanctuary
Bird Watching: Grab your binoculars and get going in the
park and wait till any bird pass your sight. But it is worth while. Seeing
the birds engrossed in their activities in a real fun. Go to the park at
early morning and evening and you see the all new avian world.
Rides: You can hire a ornithologist guide and enjoy bird
watching but if your adventurous spirit yearns, you can take a bicycle ride
and tour around the park and have rendezvous with the host and guest birds.
You can have fun by cycle rickshaw rides which take you along the larger
tracks. Government recognized cycle rickshaws are a pleasure. Another ride
to enjoy here is the tonga ride. These tongas are driven by horse. So sit
back and enjoy bird spotting.
Boat Cruises: If you visit the park during
boating season
and there is water in the lake, you can then book boat rides at the Tourist
Reception Center. These boat rides give you an easy way of getting close to
the bird life and the otters.
How To Reach
Air : The nearest airport is at Agra, 56 km from Bharatpur.
Rail : Regular rail services connect Bharatpur with all the major
cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Agra. The Bharatpur
railway station is 6 km from the park.
Road : Well maintained roadway services connects Bharatpur to all
the major cities of Rajasthan and its adjoining states.
